Nobody But Me—Michael Bublé
More Curate's Egg from Canadian crooner Michael Bublé. A real mix, but inevitably something for all his fans.
The man can sing. Gifted and musical, he also puts on a stage show that is pretty well unmatched today. I guess that's why he went from the 7 million club to the 70 million! Astounding.
Nobody But Me includes the inevitable self penned anthem to fun and upbeat living with I Believe In You. A paper thin exercise to get the party started. Other than a pivot chord to turn the song around, you'll hear Bublé in a nice mix with a happy message? Enough, with the genius of his first few albums? Hardly. But that's what happens when you want to be a pop star.
We finally get somewhere with Ray Noble's '30s hit The Very Thought of You. Here's where Bublé shines - exquisite baritone phrasing, digging deep into the wonderful lyrics. A great artist with a great song.
Interestingly, he sings it in the same key as Sinatra on his famous rendition with Robert Farnon's arrangement on Sinatra Sings Songs of Great Britain.
The rest is a pastiche of Dean Martin singing Italian On an Evening in Roma, his rockabilly nonsense, and a couple more anthems. Get them while they're hot! Publication in the music biz is everything. Bublé's got you covered.
Look, it's all well produced (his band sounds great on The Very Thought of You). His fans want the variety. He's serving it right at them. Enough for me? Not even close. The man taken Sinatra's mantle has enough talent to satisfy everyone. He needs a solid vocal album, and soon.
